Media & Information Literacy Workshops

Our flagship programme: hands-on training that helps ordinary people recognise misinformation, verify what they see, and pass the skill on.

Overview

The core of everything IMDIL does. Our media and information literacy (MIL) workshops are two-day, intensely practical sessions designed for the people information touches most: teachers, students, journalists, and community and religious leaders.

We teach participants to slow down before they share — to spot manipulated images, question suspicious sources, understand how algorithms shape what they see, and check claims against reliable evidence. Sessions are participatory, low-tech by design, and delivered in English and Hausa, with materials that work offline.

Every workshop ends with a training-of-trainers component: graduates leave with a lesson plan and the confidence to teach MIL in their own classroom, newsroom or community.

What participants gain

  • The ability to recognise common misinformation patterns — clickbait, doctored images, out-of-context quotes and coordinated rumours.
  • Hands-on practice verifying images and claims with free, mobile-friendly tools.
  • An understanding of algorithmic bias, echo chambers and why credible information is a public good.
  • A ready-to-use lesson plan and trainer's guide, so the skill keeps spreading after we leave.

What we've achieved

  • 25+ workshops delivered across six states.
  • 2,400+ participants trained, from schoolteachers to community radio hosts.
  • 300+ educators now teach MIL in their own classrooms.
  • Local-language materials in English and Hausa, free for anyone to reuse.
